Coaching Rule #3 – The train doesn’t stop twice

COACHING RULE #3: THE TRAIN DOESN’T STOP TWICE

Many of us have been in the situation where an advertised role has caught our eye. Either the title sounded good, the company offering the role appealed, or more importantly we had some of the required skills and qualifications.

There are numerous reasons why we might not go through and actually apply for that role. But what is really going on in our minds when the reason we don’t apply is “I just don’t think I’m ready for that yet”?

Putting a label on it, one factor could be “imposter syndrome”. Put simply, this is where the nagging doubts in our heads about things we may not have mastered overtake all the other things we are great at. We sit back and wait for the next train, when the train that has a seat ready for us departs – sadly occupied by somebody else.

Imposter syndrome needs to be re-framed as just another form of performance anxiety. This is completely normal, and usually a great predictor of success. Chances are, if you care about something enough to worry about it, you’ll make the effort to prepare well, draw on skills you take for granted but may not realise you have, and anticipate the speedbumps.

Clever coaching can help you develop a plan to address your weaknesses, but also make you completely able to enunciate your strengths (or personal value proposition). A good hiring manager will want to know about both.

Next week I examine strengths and weaknesses further, framed under a rule put forward by Patrick Mouratoglou, current tennis coach of Simona Halep.
